Anti-bullying
Bullying is unwanted behaviour that causes physical or emotional pain to others. It involves an imbalance of power, where one person has the chance to make someone else miserable.
Primary aged students are not always aware that their behaviour be bullying, so we teach the children regularly about the different types of bullying behaviours.
The most important thing we tell our students is that they must tell someone they trust if they are being bullied, but we also stress that it important that students that are not involved in the bullying, but are aware of it, also tell someone who can help.
Bullying can sometimes be used to single out a student who is different in some way, due to their cultural background, behaviour or even their aptitude in class. At St George’s we celebrate differences and teach that people being different means that we have a much wider range of skills, knowledge and understanding to share. Our differences are what make us unique and make the world such an interesting place to live in.
The following links have some ideas that can be shared with primary aged children when discussing bullying. There are ideas on how to deal with bullying if it happens to you or someone you know, videos and stories to share and ideas on how to talk to your child about being respectful to others.
