Rukayyah Yussuf Life as A Somali Refugee
Posted 10/09/2018 16:21

Rukayyah Yussuf was invited to Primary’s Assembly to give a talk about her life as a refugee fleeing Somalia. The whole auditorium listened in utter silence and almost disbelief as Rukayyah recounted her heart-breaking journey as a refugee.

After assembly, Year 6 Students received the rare opportunity to ask questions and hear first-hand how Rukayyah just 10 years old had no choice but to leave her Grandmother and be shipped off to Yemen on a tiny boat with many other refugee children. From Yemen she was transferred illegally to a refugee camp in Kenya where she was eventually put in a foster care home in the UK. From there her life was far from simple, Rukayyah could not speak the language, she spoke of her feelings of being misunderstood and of having no friends. However through her own positivity and her will to never give up, Rukayyah learnt English and since then has become an incredible inspirational speaker for many people. She has met the Royal family, given many inspirational talks around the world and now at the age of just 21, she is an Ambassador to multiple organisations such as OutwardBoundUK. Alongside her studies at University, Rukayyah is also setting up her own charity in Africa to help educate children.

Thank you Rukayyah for taking the time to come to Luxembourg and speak to our Primary students. The talk was eye opening and really makes one realise how fortunate we are.
