Account from Eleanor, Sixth Form Student:

The new year got off to a great start, the professional women’s cyclist Christine Majerus came to speak to Sixth Form students on Monday 8th January 2018. She has won approximately 22 national Luxembourgish titles in three different disciplines and is enthusiastic about sharing how she has learned to turn her passion into a career and find her calling. She personally feels really lucky that she is able to make a living out of a passion and she wants to motivate us to do the same. In her presentation, Christine talked about ‘what it takes?’ and how you need talent, effort and grit over time to reach your desired achievement. The importance of quality over quantity is something she also stressed. We need to set a goal, challenge ourselves, seek feedback and repeat with reflection. Christine left us with a proposal to make a ‘passion wall’ and discuss how to get from our passions to our purpose and hope in order to excel in our lives and be happy.

News Story sent to press:

On Monday, St George’s Secondary students had a very special guest join them for their first assembly of the year 2018. Luxembourgish bicycle champion, Christine Majerus gave Sixth Form students a very powerful talk encouraging them to find their passions and introduced a guide on becoming a ‘grittier’ person. The world champion explained to the students that grit is a personality trait possessed by those who show passion and perseverance towards a particular long term goal despite being confronted by obstacles. ‘Anyone can become gritty, gritty people don’t give up, they have a passion and keep that going’.

During the talk students were asked to write down their passions and Ms Majerus then discussed ways in which these passions could be pursued. Ms Majerus told students once they find their passion it was imperative to set goals, to challenge yourself and to never give up. ‘Every great story happened when someone decided not to give up’. Ms Majerus collated posters with this statement and handed them out to all the students at the end of the presentation.

A huge thank you to Ms Majerus for taking the time out of her extremely busy schedule to give this motivational talk to our students. It was extremely interesting hearing Ms Majerus use her personal experience and achievements to get students thinking about how they can get from their passion to their purpose in order to achieve their potential. Sixth Form students will take on the Luxembourgish world champion’s advice by creating a ‘Passion wall’ in their Common room, motivating them to become grittier and to never give up on their aspirations.
