As part of National Poetry Day Secondary students spent time this afternoon enjoying, discovering, writing and sharing poems.
Year 8 chose the theme of victimisation. The students were keen on raising awareness of injustice in society. They covered themes such as racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, slavery and sexism. The class experimented with various poem types such as: haikus, rhyming poetry and free verse.
Here is the example of poetry written by Year 8:
Black, white or yellow, it doesn’t matter to me
Even when all the others call me ugly
They always choose me last and that really bothers me
Can’t everyone be treated the same?
I’m done with taking the blame
It’s gone too far
We’ve gone insane
